I am involved in English Teacher Education in Japan. I started this blog in 2005 and abandoned and returned to it a couple of times. Here, I write about things I have tried in class, my experience in teacher education in Japan and other places, and deep thoughts about the origin of the universe. This blog used to be anonymous but no longer. I try not to write anything that will get me fired.

I think you just have to try to teach him the word "dog" first. It would be better. And then, as soon as he is ready change "dog" into "doggy". Make sure he's got the clear meanings.
Thnaks for the comment. To be honest, I don't think it really matters what I teach my son. I think that children acquire language at their own pace and on their own terms. All they need is input and they will figure everything out themselves. That is the miracle of child language learning.
