Teaching Reading

Last week in class we discussed how to teach reading. I would like to ask current teachers and my students the following questions.

For teachers with experience teaching reading: What methods have you used to teach English reading before and why did you select such methods?

For aspiring teachers with no experience teaching reading: What methods do you think would be useful when teaching English reading? Why would you select such methods?

Please submit a comment by Wednesday, July 27.

I really liked "direct experience or hands on learning". If we did not know about American football, we won't be interested in the story of American football. I think it is useful to quicked students'interest to the story before reading. And students will try to read the story willingly. To get up from their seats and participate in some activity related to the content of the reading is very good idea, because using their body(TPR) is useful to remember the study well. I want to use students as examples with religious care.

I like the way of reading in the Reader’s Theatre the best. It was a lot of fun for both of speakers and listeners, though there are some problems whether English teachers should call on shy students or not. You know, my opinion is English teachers should call on shy students, so the way of reading in the Reader’s Theatre like short play is useful for students. Of course, the teacher must pay attentions to the students not to feel bad.

I think "direct experience" is good way for students. We have student remember their activities. And also students could feel fun and interesting the class, if there are many activities of students. I think direct experiences continue to remind of their mind.
And, this way can be hints and it is useful to read English.

I like "Reader's Theatre" I think this way is useful because students can read in order to not only understand but also express. Students can bacome both readers and listners. "Reader's Theatre" teach many things, such as how to make public and catch, but this way is advanced. If there are shy students in class, this way is useful. Shy students have few chances announcing. If teacher can help them nicely, they can get a chance announcing and learn how to make public.

I use different methods depending on the kinds of meterials. For the 7th graders, to memorize and read aloud. For the 8th graders, English comprehension questions ( four choice items to be chosen ) are provided. For the 9the graders, to express their own reflection about the content in Japanese or in English. a J.H.S. teacher

My method is that grasping the points(grammars) in the page before students read it. It enables them to read more smoothly the page. I think the class of Reding is too busy for students and teachers to absorb the content. Reading class should be a place that students to slove questions and be pleased at reading. I think this is 'Reading's essence.' And it is necessary to have practical experiences and enjoy using English. But these methods' weak point is to need much time.

I blieve that it is more important to take more time for `practice` such as reading aloud, pair reading etc in classes. In my opinion, translating word by word or sentence by sentence is waste of time. Only 'Grasping the outline' is enough for junior high school students.

I think "work association tasks" ia the best method. It is good warm-up for students. They can imagine things be associated by this method. They think many words and images. If they know a lot of words, they can say many association things.Reading needs a lot of words. It is important for them to have a lot of words. Then, this method is good idea before reading. When I teach English for students, I want to use this method before reading.

I think "Rearder's theater" is best methods of reading. Of course, it is important to read through order of words, sentence, grammar and the organization of the text. But, it will give bore for children or students. So, teacher is important to impress them as reading's interesting. they will remember impression interesting class than bore class. I think it will connect leading's interesting and acquisition for them.

I think "skimming" is useful when teaching English reading. Students can grasp the content roughly, and can read faster.
Many students will look up an English word in a dictionary every time they don't know the word. I think it takes a lot of time to do, and it is not practical. Students can guess the content and the words they don't know through skimming the sentences. So I want to use "skimming" at first. After that, students had better read in detail.

I thought to teach The Top-Down Model would be useful. I think almost all of students are reading with The Bottom-Up Model. It takes lots of time to read. But in contrast to it, Top-Down Model enables us to read more fast.In this method, students can use their prior knowledge to help them understand the meaning of a text. I think to know this method is very useful for students.

I selected two methods.
1. Word association tasks
2. Direct experience or hands on learning

Because...
1. Word association tasks
Students can increase their vocabulary through it, and they can also learn some words which they didn't know.

2. Direct experience or hands on learning
To do some activities was fun and helped student's understanding. And they used their body, brain, feeling and experience. It had students remembering effectively.

I also like direct experience before reading. If students know concrete imfofmation which related the story, they would use imagenation during the reading.I think it is important things.Mr.Hall said that he didn't use a dictionaly so much when he reading a book. It may mean he use imagenation. Thanks to do that people can expectation the words. of course sometimes we should check the correct meaning of the word, but to find some rules of the words by oneself will make reading interesting." Enjoy"is most important to learn something.Discovery is conect with this. Then imagination lead discovery.

I think the method the students read fast as they can would be useful when teaching English reading. I think the method particularly needs “Automatic recognition skills” and the ability of predicting the meaning of unfamiliar words. There are some reasons why I think this method would be useful. To begin with, the faster you read, the more actively your brain work. This has been proved by “English Reading 1” class that I took for this semester. In this class, the teacher always said to us “Read fast as you can.” Thanks to him, my brain worked more actively, and I could read many books and enjoyed myself.
Secondly, I think the students will get the ability of thinking by predicting the meaning of words.
Therefore, I think it is important to read fast.

I think that any methods will be good for reading. But I like "Direct experience or hands on learning", because I have never experienced such as this reading activity. The method was very fun and active. So students will enjoy this activity and be able to have an impressive experience. Thanks to these things, students' reading ability will be better and students will not forget this story. The introduction is very important, therefore, teachers should draw students' interest as possible as.
Of course when we read English sentences, we must take care of "Word association tasks" and "Grammar".As students are accustomed to reading English sentences, "skimming" also will be effective.

I think the Reader's Theatre is the best way of reading because I took part in this method and thought it is very fan for students. Students will be also interested in the storty before reading. Reading story by using grammar and word's knowledge is very important but only this way will be bored for students. I want students to fun English.

I liked "direct experience or hands on learning". Amemane said "imagination is very important for remenber the study". I think so too. To memorize and understand meaning, using imagination is important, I think. also, if students know the information in advance, maybe they interested in that study. The interest also help to get knowledge.

In Pre-Reading, I think "Direct experience or hands on learning" is important for us to understand the story of background before we read it. If students don't know the backgrounds about the story(for example, American football), students would not be interested in it. And also, students can imagine the story and think. So, this is important for readers to understand the context. Especially, for leaners.
